Tulsidas Jayanti is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Goswami Tulsidas, who was a great Hindu saint and poet. He was also the acclaimed author of the great Hindu epic Ramcharitmanas. Tulsidas Jayanti is celebrated on the ‘Saptami’ (7th day) of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight of the moon) during the month of ‘Shravan’ in the traditional Hindu calendar.

For those following the Gregorian calendar, this date falls in the month of August. The Ramayana was originally written in Sanskrit by Valmiki and was accessible only to scholars to understand. However, when Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas came into existence, the greatness of the famous epic became popular among the masses. It was written in Avadi, a dialect of Hindi. Therefore the day of Tulsidas Jayanti is dedicated in the honor of this great poet and his works.

Importance of Tulsidas Jayanti

Tulsidas (1497-1623 C.E.) was a Hindu saint and poet. Tulsidas is famous for his great devotion towards Lord Rama. Tulsidas composed many works, but is best known as the author of the epic Ramcharitmanas, a rewriting of the Sanskrit Ramayana in the local Awadhi language.

Tulsidas was considered to be the reincarnation of Maharishi Valmiki, the author of the original Ramayana in Sanskrit. He is also considered the composer of Hanuman Chalisa, a popular devotional hymn in Awadhi dedicated to Lord Hanuman.

Tulsidas spent most of his life in the city of Varanasi. The famous Tulsi Ghat on the river Ganga in Varanasi is named after him. The famous Sankatmochan temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman is believed to be founded by Tulsidas. According to the Hindu lunar calendar, Tulsidas was born on Shravan, Shukla Paksha Saptami and this day is celebrated as the birth anniversary of poet Tulsidas. Tulsidas is also known as Goswami Tulsidas.

Tulsidas Jayanti is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm in the memory of this great saint. This day gives every Hindu devotee a chance to express his gratitude to the author who popularized Ramayana all over India. It was due to the easy recitation and meaning of Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas that Lord Rama became known to a common man and was also understood as a supreme being.

On the auspicious day of Tulsidas Jayanti, various recitations of Shri Ramcharitmanas are organized in the temples of Lord Hanuman and Ram across the country. On Tulsidas Jayanti, many symposia and seminars are organized based on the teachings of Tulsidas. Besides, there is also a tradition of providing food to Brahmins at many places on this day.
