Amavasya is the lunar phase when the Moon is not visible. In Sanskrit, “Ama” means “together”, and “Vasya” means ”cohabit”. According to the Hindu Calendar, there are 30 lunar phases, called “tithi”.
When the Moon is within the 12 degrees of angular distance between the Sun and the Moon is known as Amavasya or No Moon. Pratipada or the New Moon tithi is the 12 degrees angular distance between the Sun and Moon after conjunction. The period between Purnima and Amavasya is termed Krishna Paksha. As per Hindu Calendar, Amavasya falls during Krishna Paksha of the Chaitra month is known as Chaitra Amavasya.
Chaitra Amavasya is considered a very auspicious day in our religion. This Amavasya falls in the month of March-April. However, this day has a great significance in our Indian Culture.
